Unhappy Shahid won’t play under current PCB set-up
KARACHI: Shahid Afridi may have accepted a hefty fine imposed on him by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) but the allrounder has decided against changing his mind about not playing for Pakistan till the time the current Board set-up is in power, writes Khalid Hussain.
Sources told ‘The News’ that Afridi has decided to stay away from international cricket and will only think about returning to national duty once there is a change in the PCB which is currently headed by the controversial Ijaz Butt.
According to sources, the former Pakistan captain still believes that he was treated unfairly by the PCB, which removed him as Pakistan’s one-day captain last month.
“He (Shahid) is unhappy with the shabby manner the Board treated him and will not play under the current management,” said a source.
When asked about his international future, Afridi told reporters in Lahore on Thursday: “I am in no mood to play international cricket at the moment.”
He declined to give any reasons for his statement but according to sources Afridi is convinced that the current PCB regime holds a personal grudge against him.
Sources privy to the PCB disciplinary committee hearing revealed that the Board’s top brass went all out to extract an apology from Afridi.
“Afridi was under pressure from various quarters to say sorry to PCB but he refused. He (Afridi) believes that circumstances created by the PCB forced him to breach discipline and that he won’t apologise for it.”
Earlier, Afridi made it clear that he has refused to say sorry in front of the disciplinary committee that grilled him for a couple of hours at the PCB headquarters in Lahore on Thursday.
“I admit I have made mistakes but the circumstances forced me to do things. But I have not apologised to the committee,” said Afridi.
During his meeting with the three-man disciplinary committee, Afridi narrated the problems that he faced during his tenure as Pakistan captain.
“He (Afridi) told the committee how he brought the best out of Pakistan in spite of all the odds. He told them that he kept telling the Board about his problems but nobody cared to do anything about it.”
