India to Host Pakistan in Cricket Series
Pakistan’s cricket team will travel to India in 2012 for three Test matches and five One-Day Internationals, marking a further breakthrough in sporting relations between the two countries.
Pakistan played in India during the World Cup this year but the two countries haven’t played a full series since terrorist attacks in Mumbai in 2008. While Pakistan played in India during the World Cup earlier this year, the arch rivals haven’t played a full series since Pakistan-based militants carried out the November 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai. The International Cricket Council’s “Future Tours Programme” shows that India will host Pakistan in March and April next year. It didn’t elaborate. Once again, the cricket calendar is chock-full. Pakistan’s tour comes right after India returns from a two-and-and-half month series in ODIs, the program says.Prior to the December-February tour Down Under, India will host the West Indies – where India is playing a series right now – in a three-Test, five-ODI series that follows hot on the heels of England’s tour to the sub-continent. The Board of Control for Cricket in India Wednesday announced details of the England tour, which will feature five ODIs and a Twenty20 match. The ODIs will be played October 14-26 in Hyderabad, Delhi, Mohali, Mumbai and Kolkata’s Eden Gardens, which will also host the sole T20 international on Oct. 29. The ICC also announced that Pakistan’s cricket board has asked to host an international cricket event in 2018. “The ICC Executive Board noted a request from the PCB to consider hosting an ICC event in Pakistan in 2018,” it said in a statement issued during the board’s ongoing meeting in Hong Kong. “No discussion was held and no assurances were given as the ICC has no confirmed event currently scheduled for 2018,” the statement added. The most likely event would be a World T20 tournament, as they take place every two years. The 2012 World T20 will be held in Sri Lanka, while Bangladesh will host the 2014 edition. “We fully understand the PCB request and we will consider if it is possible to host an event in Pakistan subject to the standard safety and security clearances,” ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat said in the statement. Pakistan hasn’t been allowed to host cricket matches on its soil since early 2009, when gunmen attacked a bus carrying Sri Lanka’s cricket team through Lahore, killing six policemen and a driver. Other countries have stepped in to help Pakistan cricket back from the abyss. In July last year, for example, Pakistan played host to Australia even though the series was held in England. Pakistan’s upcoming “home” series’ against Sri Lanka and England will be held in the United Arab Emirates. The Sri Lanka series in October and November this year will include three Tests and five ODIs. In a statement Wednesday, the PCB said England’s tour would comprise three Tests, four ODIs and three T20 matches to be played in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. |
