Shahid Afridi’s Hampshire fall in Super-Over
BIRMINGHAM: A blistering 42-ball 80 from Shahid Afridi failed to save defending champions Hampshire from a Super Over defeat against Somerset in their rain-affected Friends Life t20 semifinal at Edgbaston on Saturday.
The former Pakistan captain was in top gear in the match as he propelled Hampshire to 138 for 4 in 15.5 overs. Afridi hit 11 boundaries including five sixers in his highly entertaining knock leaving Somerset facing a testing Duckworth/Lewis-adjusted chase of 95 in 10 overs.
However, Jos Butler smashed a 16-ball 32 to almost take Somerset to an easy win before Hampshire skipper Dominic Cork bowled a superb final over to take match into an eliminator. In the shootout Somerset scored 16 off Afridi’s over. Alfonso Thomas then restricted Hampshire to take his team into the final.
Earlier, Leicestershire booked their place in the final of the event with a dramatic victory over Lancashire in a one-over shoot-out.
Lancashire batsman Gareth Cross hit a six off the last ball of their innings to tie the scores after two interruptions for rain had forced a Duckworth/Lewis calculation.
It meant each team would receive six balls in a bid to separate them, and Lancashire went in first scoring 13 from the over bowled by veteran spinner Claude Henderson.
Foxes batsmen Will Jefferson and Josh Cobb knew what they had to do against Lancashire spinner Gary Keedy, the former coolly hitting boundaries from the first two deliveries.
They required four from the last two balls but only one was required — Jefferson smearing Keedy over the mid-wicket fence to send the two-time champions through.
Leicestershire had earlier made 132-6 after rain reduced their innings to 18 overs, Jefferson hitting five boundaries in his 23 from 15 balls before Pakistan allrounder Abdul Razzaq gave them late impetus with 36 off 28 deliveries.
