Pakistan:Shahid Afridi joins hands in SKF’s flood relief efforts

KARACHI: Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi and other sports stars have joined hands with SKF Pakistan in a bid to boost relief efforts being carried out by the company in Dadu.
Afridi together with former Test cricketer and ex-chief selector Salahuddin Ahmed, former Test wicketkeeper Saleem Yousuf and Test batsman Faisal Iqbal turned up at a fund-raiser hosted by SKF Pakistan at the Karachi Golf Club.
“It’s a very noble cause and whenever SKF needs any help from me, I’ll be there,” said Afridi, one of the world’s most prolific allrounders. “The people hit by floods in various parts of our country really need our support,” added Afridi during his speech at the occasion.
Some of the players donated their memorabilia that included a World Cup cricket bat, World Cup T-shirt donated by Afridi and a hockey stick donated by Sohail Abbas, world hockey’s highest goal-scorer.
A year after devastating floods hit Pakistan, experts are warning that much still needs to be done to prevent damage from this year’s monsoons, already upon us. Thousands died and millions were left homeless after the deadly floods of 2010 and now there are loud and clear warnings that Pakistan is still unprepared for the worst.
The catastrophe brought the best out of many of us. It followed an outpour of relief work in the affected areas.
SKF Pakistan, too, was quick to act and set out to help our brethren in need. It all started with a baby step but within months after last year’s floods, SKF helped establish two villages for the victims in Dadu. Relief work undertaken in an SKF Village includes: installation of tents, construction of houses, distribution of ration, medical camps, ambulance service, water filter plants, distribution of books, classrooms, play areas for children, distribution of clothes and sports items etc.
SKF Pakistan is planning to carry out more relief and reconstruction work in Dadu and other affected areas in the coming weeks.
Iqbal Hashmi, Managing Director SKF Pakistan said: “The devastating floods in 2010 were the worst in the history of Pakistan. Besides valuable lives an estimated loss of ten billion dollars of prime national assets were borne by our nation. The people of Pakistan, demonstrating their national character of unbeatable resilience and sheer determination came forward to support their fellow Pakistanis at the time of need.
“SKF Pakistan built a village of tents to provide relief to flood victims. In continuation, we constructed 124 houses in two villages in Dadu while construction work of two more villages is still in hand. Let us join hands to support the flood victims of Dadu, they need us.”
Salahuddin Ahmed urged a packed audience at the event to come forward and contribute towards the cause. “Its our duty to support or brothers in need,” he said.
