‘Rameez ready for national duty’

KARACHI: Rameez Raja Jr’s scintillating batting exploits in the recently-concluded Faysal Bank T20 have earned him rave reviews and many experts now believe that he is ready to don the national team colours.
Former Test batsman Shoaib Mohammad reckons that Karachi Dolphins’ Rameez, who was also the top run-scorer in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, is ready to play for Pakistan after his impressive performances through out the domestic season.
“Rameez is ready to represent Pakistan and this is the best time that he is put in the team as he is going through a purple patch,” Shoaib, a former national selector, told ‘The News’ on Sunday.
“His consistent performances show that his batting displays are no fluke and he has the potential to excel. Now the selectors should induct him to test his mettle.”
Several stars failed during the T20 competition as they succumbed to the pressure of televised matches and tense encounters. Imran Nazir, Shazaib Hasan, Ahmed Shehzad, Kamran Akmal, Asif Hussain, Nasir Jamshed and Mansoor Amjad failed to rise to the occasion. However, that did not affect Rameez at all as he scored 238 runs in five matches at a strike-rate of nearly 160.00. Earlier in the year, he scored 801 runs for Karachi Blues to become the best batsman in Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and new boys State Bank instantly grabbed him to represent them in the next edition.
And Dolphins’ coach Azam Khan says that Rameez’s performances show how good a batsman he is. “His performances speak for his talent and potential he has and he doesn’t need anyone’s support to break into the national side,” he stressed. “He was superb throughout and never showed any signs of nerves. He is suitable for all three formats of the game and can bat at any number in the batting order.”
Khan went on to especially praise the efforts of Asad Shafiq, Sohail Khan, Haris Ayaz and Khalid Latif. “Asad Shafiq was under pressure after the first match but the way he stood up in the next matches and improvised was just pleasant to the eye and deserves appreciation because he answered his critics in the best manner,” he said.
“Khalid Latif too showed what he is capable of in his cameos while I should say that Sohail Khan was by far the best fast bowler of the tournament because he bowled with pace and has developed very good variations to become even more effective.”
