Broad extends Tendulkar’s poor Lord’s record
LONDON: Stuart Broad extended Sachin Tendulkar’s miserable record at Lord’s on Saturday by dismissing the Indian master for 34 on the third day of the first Test.
Tendulkar, who needs only one more century to reach an unprecedented 100 international hundreds, looked in sublime form when he stroked five boundaries in the first seven overs after lunch.
England captain Andrew Strauss then introduced Broad from the Nursery end for his second spell of the match and the England fast bowler responded by inducing a false shot from Tendulkar who steered the ball to Graeme Swann at second slip.
Tendulkar, 38, playing in what is likely to be his final match at world cricket’s headquarters, has a highest score of only 37 at Lord’s in eight innings.
India, 158 for two in pursuit of England’s 474 for eight declared before Tendulkar’s dismissal, had slumped to 193 for five at tea despite two dropped catches off Broad in the same over.
Strauss at first slip floored the easiest of chances from Vangipurappu Laxman before the batsman had scored and Rahul Dravid on 42 was dropped five balls later by Graeme Swann at second slip diving to his right.
Laxman failed to profit from his left off, falling for 10 when he lofted a hook off Chris Tremlett to Jonathan Trott at long-leg. Suresh Raina lasted only two balls, succumbing lbw to Swann for a duck.
Dravid was still there on 59 at the interval, alternating watchful defence in overcast conditions giving assistance to the England pace bowlers with crisp drives. He reached his 61st Test half-century by striking Swann for his 10th four.
Broad, whose place in the side had been questioned after an indifferent series against Sri Lanka, responded by dismissing both openers in the morning session.
Gautam Gambhir and Abhinav Mukund, who was substituting for the injured Virender Sehwag, successfully negotiated the new ball to put on 63 for the first wicket.
Broad then comprehensively bowled Gambhir for 15 with a delivery which swung in late to the left-hander.
Mukund, another left-hander who made his Test debut in the Caribbean this year, took consecutive fours off Tremlett on the leg-side as the England fast bowler struggled with his direction.
He played a delightful off-drive off Broad for another boundary before dragging on a full-length ball one short of what would have been his second Test half-century.
