Big boys missing as Super Eight T20 begins
KARACHI: The electrifying Super Eight T20 is due to begin in three days without some of the biggest cricketers of the country.
World’s fastest bowler Shoaib Akhtar has retired from all formats of the game while ‘Boom Boom’ Shahid Afridi, who was never interested in playing here, will be representing Hampshire in the England’s domestic T20 competition.
Both Akhtar and Afridi are by far the most glamorous players of their generation and their presence means a lot to any domestic or international tournament. The duo enjoy a massive following amongst fans in the cricket-mad country and it was their presence due to which thousands flocked to the ground while millions remained glued to their television sets.
However, the list of big-name absentees doesn’t end there.
The hard-hitting Abdul Razzaq will not be able to take part in the tournament as he is busy in slogging big for Leceistershire in England. Other prominent names who will not be present for the event include cunning off-spinner Saeed Ajmal and budding pacer Wahab Riaz who has developed himself as a force to be reckoned because of his speed and swinging yorkers.
But there is a certain contradiction in the stance of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) which has allowed centrally-contracted players to turn out in foreign leagues and neglect the primary duties of playing in the domestic tournament. The board did not allow wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal to take part in the Bangladesh League and told him that since he is a centrally contracted player, he can not go abroad and play when the domestic season is underway.
But that is not the case with Wahab and Razzaq. It would not be wrong to say that these players have preferred money over the domestic tournament because of the leniency and double standards of the PCB, which in a way suggests that the centrally contracted players can play anywhere they want in spite of domestic tournaments being played in Pakistan.
Apart from these players, the tainted trio of Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir will also be limited to their TV sets as they are banned from taking part in any competitive cricket. Other T20 specialists who are missing from the event are seasoned all-rounder Azhar Mehmood, Yasir Arafat, Anwar Ali, Kamran Younis, Babar Naeem.
Meanwhile, players like Imran Farhat, Danish Kaneria, Faisal Iqbal, Hasan Raza, Khaqan Arsal were not eligible since they were involved with Karachi Zebras and Lahore Eagles
in the previous tournament and the new rule does not allow the players to be shuffled in Karachi and Lahore teams.
